Shape Up for Spring!
Spring has sprung and you’re wondering where to begin? Well, if you are like many other women that are deciding to hit the gym first; this article is for you! While thumbing through my April issue of Fitness I came across a great article about “Walking your way slim!” As a former distance runner looking for health and fitness alternatives I was impressed with the workout. I have looked to Fitness Magazine for years when it comes to getting fit, recipes, and references that are true that provide real results!
Walking for 45 minutes 3-4 days a week and doing low impact exercise can burn up to 1300 calories per week! If exercise isn’t your thing and you would rather shy away from anything longer than 5-10 minutes then I suggest the 10 Minute Trainer! This series of videos kick butt! After my first 2 minutes I was ready to through in the towel. Not only was I sweating, but I felt the burn! Now for those ladies that need a riveting challenge there is always P90X and P90XPlus! I personally wouldn’t be able to do it based on my schedule…”yes, I’m making up excuses!” I have one word for P90Xers: “Why?”
When you’ve decided what works best for you, gather all the necessary tools: new fitness sneaks, your DVD player, towel, 32 ounce water bottle, heart monitor watch, yoga mat and any other necessary items. Always remember to have fun! It’s important to keep a light heart while achieving your fitness and personal goals. By setting small challenges/goals you are more likely to reach your overall goals! The working out to get fit, and working out to loose weight or fit in a new pair of jeans works differently with different individuals. Choose wisely how you shape up for Spring!
Once you’ve reached your goal(s) reward yourself! A new outfit, donate money saved on eating in, girl’s night out, or something you really wanted but held out on! Enjoy! You deserve it!

But, I feel truly blessed to be able to share my gifts, experiences and knowledge with others.

Scheduling Yourself
Making Time for Self
We all discuss it. We all agree we need more of it and what we would do if we had more of it. Time comes and goes without a moments notice. It is important to prioritize a to do list, and implement time management skills in order to have free time. Each of us love a little time to ourselves, and we can all use at least 5 minutes extra in our day. Below, I’ve outline a few important steps to take when creating a to-do list and implementing time management. Feel free to tweek it and customize it to your needs. Remember, the more you practice the more it becomes habit!
To Create a To-Do List
- Use numbers to list what needs to be done, and to keep track of how many things you need/ have to do.
- Use the number one to play one of three roles; the least important to do, or the most important, or general reference to track the amount of things to do. If you are using the least/most important format to prioritize please note that the number format will increase in priority and attention required as the least important items you consider easy to do and get out of the way are eliminated early in the list.
- Apply some type of indication that you have accomplished specific task: this can be a check mark on the side of the number or a slash through to indicate completion. I often use slashes along with writing a date of completion in short format e.g. 2/23 beside the to-do item. This allows you to refer to your to-do at a later date if you should need to reference it.
Implementing Time Management
I normally like to tell people that the best way to manage time is by managing yourself first. Identifying what things require the most of your day, and scheduling them is the key to successful time management. By using a To-Do List you can successfully manage the amount of time it takes to take care of life’s important and not so important things to do. There is an easy and effective way to manage your time and yourself. I’ve included three surefire ways to manage your time, and yourself and still have time left!
- Remove all distractions when handling anything that calls for your attention. By clearing your space of distractions you are most likely to handle task more efficiently and in a shorter time.
- Have a plan. Know what it is your have to complete daily and what you would like to complete within your day. This will aid in the steps you choose to use when completing your task (to-do) and create an awareness of of the tools required e.g. fax, copies, notes, checks and/or money order, stamps, etc.
- Schedule 5 minutes at least once a day for yourself! Light an aromatic candle and take in the scent, listen to your favorite song, or write a quick note to a loved one! Anything you can fit into at least 5 minutes will do. There are even 5 minute workouts!
When applying any of the above always remember to “give back” to the person accomplishing the task and keep the cycle going. You will feel more refreshed and accomplished throughout tasking and the day!
Seeking That Which You Cannot Give
Amazing isn’t it how life has it’s own way of swinging around 360 degrees! There are days I personally fight with doing the right thing and making that decision I am not too happy with making. However, what is satisfying is the fact I was able to make the decision regardless because I choose to live by that Golden Rule you will often here me reference, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!” Sometimes, it is the mantras, adages, and scripture that we reference in a split second when making some of life’s difficult decisions.
As a mother, I often tell my sons, “ Not to expect what they cannot give, but not to give just to get in return.” I make sure that when I speak with them that it is in plain English and very to the point. I never want them to misinterpret something and then when they are older have another one of life’s epiphanies and there you have it; they are left feeling guilty and as if they’ve really not done great things with their time. At times I believe that we can all stand to be reminded about seeking that which we cannot give.
